Wood Flooring Terms Explained

Solid wood Flooring: Each plank, strip or parquet block is a solid piece of that particular species, generally anything from 70mm wide up to 150mm and 18mm- 21 mm thick. Solid wood flooring should either be glued or nailed to the sub floor in every case.

Engineered solid wood flooring: Engineered wood floor products consist of a real wood wear layer anything from 3mm-6mm in thickness. Engineered flooring is available in far wider width boards than solid wood, due to the increased stability they get from the veneer backing boards. Engineered wood flooring is ideal for under floor heating and can be glued, nailed or floated.

Grades:

A&B: Allows slight to medium colour variation, live knots below 20mm, dead knots below 5mm, dark brown streaks about 3mm

C: Allows a natural colour variation, live knots allowed, dead knots below 15mm, filler may be used as long as it’s similar to the overall tone of the wood

D: As with C grade but with knots up to 40mm

Finish and Texture

Pre finished:These floor boards will be pre finished with either a lacquer or hard wax oil. These finishes offer many variations from full on gloss, satin, satin/matt to a matt finish.

Unfinished: As the term suggests these floor boards are delivered to you with no finish applied, allowing you the freedom to finish as required with the products that you want.

Textures: A variety of textures and stains/tints are available; brushed, scraped, “v” grove, antique and distressed etc.
